I actually find the current gen Camry to be kind of a go-to when there's nothing interesting to rent or only sedans, :truk: , CUVs, and minivans.

I've had Chevy, VW, slanty H/fake Lexus (Kia) sedans and all are worse than Camry IMO. The Chevy and VW are blandsville from the get-go but the Hyundai/Kia are most disappointing because they actually look really good and then are just sort of blah once you're in them.
I think that once you get above the versa/sentra the Nissans are fine as appliances. I had an Altima rental probably 10 years ago now that was fine, got like 38 mpg on the highway and was comfortable and quiet enough. The lower tier ones are trash, the last one I had, can't remember if sentra or versa, didn't even have cruise control - not adaptive cruise, just regular... I went back to the counter and exchanged it for some SUV since I was about to drive 12 hours on the highway and had booked "Jetta or similar" :disgust:

Altima has a “giant” 2.5 liter beast. I’d prefer that over any sort of gm turbo nightmare.

My friends are always impressed when they get a Maxima rental too.

The sonata seems kind of nice inside, no? Yeah Chevy Malibu might be the worst new car I’ve ever rented. Infotainment was ok but everything else was awful. I was pretty disappointed they gave me that instead of an Altima last year. I should have spoken up. That 1.5?t and CVT combo was horrific.
Yeah, nice enough and quite comfy... I just hate the way they drive. Not that a Camry is exciting but it at least feels like a car... the slanty H products all feel somehow a few levels removed, like you're driving a computer that is operating the vehicle. I don't like that. I also have no faith in the reliability of the brand at this point.

Not to mention, these cars are easily targeted as they seem to be very easy to steal. Especially in my neck of the woods. Apparently you need a phone charger is pretty much the only thing you need. I felt that on the forte that it does feel like driving a video game, not horrible to drive id give it that though. And fucking kia still does ridiculous markups on mediocre mobiles that happen to look good.

Need to bump this up as there has been a lot of progress lately.

First off a HATE note for the Expedition.
2023 Expedition
Limited
26k miles

Honestly this thing felt like it had 126k miles. I know that's the whole "rental" thing but IMO there is also a lack of quality here.
Here is the wear and tear that I think is unacceptable:
The paint was starting to FADE in all plastic painted pieces
The front seat was torn from wear :wtf:
Center console chrome was bubbling off
The steering wheel was shiny and looked worse than on my 80k golf. (maybe rental dirt?) but my IX with the same miles is completely fine.
The cars suspension + the way bumps resonated through the cabin sounded like shit. There were many rattles in each one of the seat rows etc.

lets start with the positives since there aren't many:
+Engine was good matter of fact it was great. It was smooth AF. All the power is at 2000-2500rpm and the turbo whistles like a school bus. Kind of fun.
+The brakes for a car this big are surprisingly decent as well
+The car had 3 usable rows, as a resident line backer I could fit in all 3 rows... yes ALL 3, comfortably. Although I had limited headroom in the 3rd.
+The center screen was pretty high res
+The car still had physical controls for HVAC.
+Turning radius was better in than in my IX which was shocking
+Ergonomics were good, everything was pretty much where you'd expect it.

-Mpg was fucking abysmal. 16.5 miles in my driving, and the 23 gallon tank doesn't really have a long range here. What's the point of going TT when it does absolutely JACK SHIT to fuel economy. I got just about the same in the 6.2 Doomed caddy
-The 10 speed is not good, it's not a complete pile of shit but it just isn't GOOD. On the freeway on light throttle you go from 10th to 8th to keep up with traffic, to accelerate and pass it shifts down to 6th. And we're not talking like 4k rpm overtake... we're talking like 2500-3000rpm. 4 Gear downshift for a simple maneuver is just STUPID. There are TOO MANY GEARS.
-The steering was shit, yes that's a big SUV thing but it was just bad... it felt like 6 turns lock to lock.. no idea what the actual number is... but you're scissoring around the parking lots like crazy
-The TECH.. Jesus I could write a book here. Compared to Idrive this is HOT SMOKING GARBAGE. You can't use the screen while driving when it comes to entering addresses and it's absolutely impossible to get the voice command to work. CARPLAY is ok, but something about it doesn't work right either and the intra drive prompt were not great. The native system IS NOT USABLE. Unlike in my BMW where I prefer it to the CarPlay.
-The car only came with a backup camera at 70k... it was maybe comprised of 100 pixels. An absolute joke how is that acceptable on a family SUV in 2023... It needs cameras to park etc without parking feel.
-The blind spot behind the driver is really bad... and the passenger handle further hampers visibility. And the blind spot monitoring lags and works very poorly.
-The AC system is not fit for a state like Arizona... it works but it doesn't work great IMO. It needs to be superior to cool down this house.
-The "bang Olufsen" stereo is just that in name only. It sounded worse than the stock non HK stereo in my BMW I4. An absolute joke to put this name on this stereo. It clearly has nothing to do with a high end danish brand. And no one from that country touched it.

Honestly before this, I would recommend ford to some... and I even considered some fords... But after the experience I cannot possibly recommend this car to anyone... let alone this brand...
It is a solid 2/7. The only reason a point was added was for the engine which IMO is still a peach. The rest of this car is garbage.

I think you have to spring for the "Advanced trailering Package" to get all the cameras.

This is something that I hear complained about a lot. They have all this safety tech available but require the top trims to receive it.
Trucks are yuge, too yuge but that's another discussion. Give me some cameras to help park this thing!

Yea .. I guess I come from a world where “limited” trim means it’s high end ?! I mean this thing is 70k… having a camera that’s on par with the woman’s 2010 tsx is just sad

Ford's truck trims are out of control. It's impossible to keep track of.

They keep adding trims, while the raptor is cool since its out for a while. Then we have tremor which is like a diet raptor depending on which car then the raptor with all the gear and more power, more badassness

I can't get over the Ford quality I have witnessed... it is downright terrifying owning something like that past year 3-4. I think @Johnny had nothing but good things to say about them also...

My friend couldn't wait to sell his F150 hybrid because of the build quality issues, so your review checks out.

Ford seats are known for collapsed bolsters as well which you can see is already underway.

Here is are a few tidbits for the Landruiser and 4 Runner.

I have driven the following specs:

TRD OR 49,600 MSRP 4Runner
LandCruiser Premium 68,000 MSRP

I wanted to make sure I get the flavor of both the hybrid and non hybrid powertrains and I wanted to see if toyota truly charges more for NOTHING... the results were suprsing.

I'll kick it off with the land cruiser. I expected to be really meh about it....

Positives
+Good dimensions
+Good turning radius
+Hybrid felt good, almost EV like torque and power down low and good integration with the gasoline engine
+Brakes were good
+New toyota tech is EXCELLENT. Amazing safety features like front and rear cross traffic alerts, good self driving, amazing high res cameras etc... IT FELT 5/7 LUXURY + Ease of use
+Loved all the features, tons of cameras, cooled seats, rear AC controls, everything you need and nothing you don't
+Interior layout and ergonomics are quite good. You can quickly figure everything out
+Ride quality is excellent, it rides super soft but also doesn't lean terribly in turns for a largish SUV etc.
+I felt really at home in this car, everything was just done right, it smelled, drove, felt, and looked great.

Negatives
-68k MSRP. I am sorry but this is LUNACY... it's a nice car but we're talking Land Rover pricing ... Yet here I am thinking about it today.. If the MSRP started with a $5 I would have left with the car
- Engine was coarse, and I could feel some engine vibrations through the steering wheel, certainly not a very premium experience on that front
- The transmission shifted kinda rough... this seems to be a common complaint when cold.
- some interior pieces in all black looked a little cheap, but you can get it in brown also which fixes it.

Overall 4/7 only and main dig is price ... otherwise these things are quite great.

4 Runner Trd OR

Positives
+almost 20k cheaper than the LC
+ride quality was identical to me
+ even bare bones the interior quality seemed good, the seats while cloth seemed like they would last forever
+ exterior dimensions are great for a mid size SUV
+ overall quality seems great ... every thing you touch is made well and is perceived to be quite durable
+ super easy to use and drive
+- This powertrain is WORLDS better than the old 4.0/5 speed which was hot garbage

Negatives
-At 50k you feel like you're in a 35k vehicle... cloth seats, small screens, missing/blank buttons galore
-back seat is mysteriously 2" smaller than the LC, even though they share a platform
-engine while improved, is certainly a boring mess without the hybrid assist. It is worlds better than before but it is still lacking
-These cars sell within 24 hrs of coming off a truck... I was looking at one coming in friday it sold Saturday... the one that came in sat... and people lined up to sell sunday... insanity

So there you have it... I can't make up my mind here as IMO the 4 Runner is priced right but it is missing all the things that made the LC great... So it's very difficult to pull the trigger.
4/7 car

Just read the LC vs 4R review. I assume the back seat of the 4R is smaller due to the third row requirement. I know the GX has a 3rd row but maybe they made some concessions for the 4R assuming they'll sell more of those.

Looking at the 4R trims, it looks like you can get the hybrid plus all the lux features (ventilated seats, off road cameras etc), minus the rear climate zone for $10k less than the LC. Does that price difference make up for not being able to say you have a LC?

The collapsed seats have been happening since like 2005. All the trucks at the refinery had collapsed seats even the newer ones.

Interested to hear what you go with Max. Sounds like both are good vehicles just more expensive than what makes logical sense. But if they sell them all then they’ve priced it right. Annoyingly.

I really liked my friends Tacoma. Especially the engine and coil sprung rear axle / handling. I agree the motor is hands down an improvement over the 4.slow.

What’s the actual upcharge for a GX vs the LC? Gotta be pretty close in price, no?

At the absolute minimum (ones you can find) 6k on average 10-15k… and you get 30% lower fuel economy …

The GX is even more expensive than the already “overpriced” LC
