Yeah I mean lifetime average for the car is 45 or something. In the winter the MPG isn’t amazing and likely on par with the 1.5t. So it drags the average down. In the spring and summer it does great. Running the heater kills the mpg.
But during my ownership it’s been averaging closer to 50-55. Since I’m generally using it on suburban or back roads and not much highway. Kind of the ideal conditions, sub 50 mph.
The car is kind of a form of Novocain, but with a weird requirement that you dodge potholes due to the stupid wheels. The MPG is about all it really has going for it lol. It’s ok to drive and not floaty boaty around turns but I wouldn’t say it “handles well” or anything.
We rented an Accord Hybrid on our PCH trip, drove from LA to Santa Barbara, up PCH to mid coast CA and back to LA. We only got low 30s MPG which is interesting. CA has higher speeds in general versus the East Coast though.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 8:32 amYeah I mean lifetime average for the car is 45 or something. Agreed that it handles fine, but not really anything memorable.

In the small fun car category I’d actually go Giulia. But I know the MT requirement so it’s out. In that case I’d have a hard time picking an STI over a GoRf. The GoRf fixed everything I didn’t like about my GTI while being more reasonable as a daily use car and way better on fuel than the Subaru. They hold value great too. STI did have more fizz though.
Golf R is wife approved... I actually kind of prefer the sedan footprint, Golf's have not much storage, but it would work fine.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 9:59 amI think it’s worth a test drive for science.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 8:48 am

Giulia back seat is pretty tiny. They are very pretty though, and pretty fun to drive. I was so shocked by how different that power train felt versus in my Wrangler. Ripping through gears on the giant paddles was cool.

Sedan trunks are great if you need to leave the seats up due to kid seats or whatever. If the Giulia had more rear seat space I’d have very seriously considered one. But the accord works well for kid hauling and day care pick ups.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 10:03 amGolf R is wife approved... When you really think about mk4 is practically boxy, whereas mk5 sounds more valid with egg reference. Egg, hatch

If you dont push it to their limits, its about 80% there with my mk7, just not sharper, but if you really give it the beans you'd notice the car might lose it at any point, even at higher speeds.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 8:48 amWe rented an Accord Hybrid on our PCH trip, drove from LA to Santa Barbara, up PCH to mid coast CA and back to LA. My tdi would not crack 40 on the freeway. Most freeway trips it would get 36-8mpg. Where as the forum bros were all getting 50-60. So yea… Cali speeds are something else.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 8:48 amWe rented an Accord Hybrid on our PCH trip, drove from LA to Santa Barbara, up PCH to mid coast CA and back to LA. Its been a long time but I seem to remember my TDI loaners getting about 10 MPG better than the MK6 GTI did. So.... 35-37 vs 25-27. I think.max225 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 25, 2025 10:57 pmMy tdi would not crack 40 on the freeway. Most freeway trips it would get 36-8mpg. Where as the forum bros were all getting 50-60. So I’m going to have to schedule a service visit for the red rocket. It’s been yelling at me every morning that oil life is at 15%. I also have a recall to take care of. It’s also been jolting a bit when the gas motor comes on. Quick research suggests this can be an early symptom of fuel injector failure. Apparently the 2022-2024 Honda hybrids have an issue with fuel injectors sticking open. Should be covered under warranty if that’s the case. Might not be anything wrong though the car drives fine.
When I first got the car I said the front and back feel out of sync around curves. Turns out Honda installed a brake based torque vectoring system on the front axle. It’s just a bit slow to react. So that’s the feeling apparently. You can watch the car scrub speed around turns because of it. Which is annoying but it can’t be turned off. Interestingly if you turn the wheel far enough the car will realize it’s in a curve and will turn the engine on so immediate power is available to exit the curve. Which is cool. So pluses and minuses.
Some things I like a lot…
-The drivers seat moves back a couple inches when you turn the car off. The car is a pain to get out of so this helps.
-If you turn safety systems off they stay off. Good because the systems suck anyway.
-The real gear selector is way better than the stupid button thing in the CRV.
Some things I don’t like…
-The car starts to fake shift if the accelerator is pressed far enough. Which ok whatever during actual acceleration. But climbing a hill it will start fake shifting and just leave the engine screaming “in gear” despite the hill leveling off. It’s incredibly annoying and I’d much rather it did not do this.
-Overall low build quality and lack of features. I think they corrected some of the cost cutting crap with the 2025 model but why doesn’t this enormous car have rear air vents or USB ports?
-This is a stupid complaint but a lot of reviews praised the “clicky” feel of the buttons on the steering wheel and HVAC. They are very loud. I find it annoying and cheap compared to the hushed damped Mercedes Benz quality buttons the CRV has.
-It’s pretty boring but there’s not a good trade off of a solid feeling or cushy ride. It’s trying to be a bit sporty but it’s not sporty to drive and the sporty look (enormous hood and slim windows) makes it hard to place on the road. It tries to be comfortable but it should ride softer. I dunno every car has to hit some middle ground compromise, I’m just not sure what the target actually was here. The CRV is terribly boring but it’s so comfy and easy to drive that it makes complete sense and does a better job at navigating this balance.
-I wish it was all wheel drive. I don’t like FWD anymore. Wheel slip on a wet road pulling away from a stop is annoying.
Overall again it’s been pretty good at its mission. I wouldn’t get it again but it’s doing ok and meeting my needs.
