I mean... that's all true. But it's like, rich elitist lefty to the max, $22 burgers served without a smile kind of vibes. I am just cheap and if I'm in the mountains, I'd rather be hiking in the woods or something than drinking $19 cockies feeling like I'm not artsy enough to be there even though I have a fucking tuba degree.
Was def worth a visit though, there is a ton of awesome shit in the surrounding areas and if you have/had a free place to stay, that eases the burn. Hotels in Asheville pre-Helene were like $350/night for Hampton fucking Inn.
The Portland of North Carolina.

Yes it's a cool car. But prepare the lube/sawdust.
I haven't been to Portland in like seven years, but I feel like it was at least a tad more authentic.
why I have such strong feelings on Asheville, I guess that it's just generally regarded by the rest of the US as this must-see place and the one thing NC is known for and it's kinda low on the list IMO.
Whenever the rest of the country hypes something in your neighborhood, locals are first to fact check the shit out of it.

Its a cool destination. The surrounding area is beautiful. Its got all the things you want in a city (and more if you are a craft beer fan) while still being accessible to vast gorgeous wilderness.
IMHO its not the actual city people love, its the IDEA that they could make a stand there being so close to the natural beauty of the area. Dont go telling everyone, but Knoxville has all those qualities, more stuff, actual industry, and stays under the radar.

Knox aint under the radar, its usually a top 10 city in growth YoY.

Whoa out of all the words to describe that town snobby is not what I would have guessed. It just seemed super left leany and hippy'Ish" based on what my best friend that moved there this year described...
I have a standing invite to go visit there and I was really looking forward to it... no idea about now...

Color me Californian, but I never even heard of the place until I read about it here and my best friend moved there from Austin.
I never understood the move considering he and his sig other have family in California and if woodsy mountain shit is your thing, Lake Tahoe/Sierra area provides the same sort of thing at the same sort of price.
This is more of a unique situation though, the area just seems very remote and takes hours to get to, for someone (like him) who constantly travels for work etc.
Watched a lot of videos on the area and it does seem to have a great east coast mountain charm which I would still like to explore. But living there is … difficult imo

This was cringe inducing to watch because of what I deem to be frankly false stereo types but it had some interesting as well
I was at that airport 2 summers ago which was practically the first "covid free" summer as a layover to Erdoganistan. Spend the night each way at the airport moxy hotel. It was nice taking a metro from the airport into Amsterdam. But we waited for 6 hours in lines for the departure due to not enough staff, its insanity.
Now that you called out Griff, im a little overdue for my travel tings, but I will say im glad I visited asheville for the first time shortly before that before shit went down with hurricane.
What did you think of Asheville? I don't really like the place much All of the surrounding mountain towns without the fame are better. Asheville is weirdly snobby and expensive and lacks the mountain views. Amazing region overall though, so many beautiful trails and roads in WNC.
I would say a good place to visit and not seeing myself living there, but did not regret it. It's like a mix of hipsters/wfh bros vs rednecky, I witnessed some dude wearing bright colors that looks like the type he would be high on molly and the like at a music festival got handcuffed. Now that you brought that up, when driving through West NC, I feel like asheville is like the equivalent to times square when it comes to West NC (aka the first place you would think of to go to). Biltmore was nice for touristy things of course. One thing I find a little weird that I do not see it in DC or maybe NY, is that I found this nice breakfast/brunch place decorated with colorful truck containers (aka gentrified places where you would get an expensive mid burger), we actually waited for a table for an hour, on a tuesday and I noticed theres a lot of people on their laptops. Id probably go to Gatlinburg next if that desire kicks in. I like Denver and Portland, Maine a whole lot better.

The whole Knoxville to Asheville SMNP region kicks ass. Recent tropical developments notwithstanding. If you fly a lot the two hour drive to Charlotte might get a little old.

There are flights into Assville but there are also lay overs every single time. like it's a 8 hr trip to go to cali vs say 4-5hrs if there is something direct.
Similar to Max, I had never heard of Asheville until people in here started talking about it, and then the hurricane wrecking it. Didn’t even know that’s where my cousin lived

I think I'd look on the Knoxville side as Brad has noted many times. City stuff with access to natural beauty.

Yeah for my job, being 15 minutes from an airport that gets me anywhere nonstop is pretty damn great.
That said I've really been thinking about this slog recently and hoping I'm not on a plane 4+X/month for the rest of my career. It would be great to just cover, say, the Carolinas, and drive everywhere.

THe Times Square thing is actually a very weird but perfect metaphor for this. It's the 'known' hub of the area, but once you get there, you realize it's a place to spend a couple of hours once and then move on to the better shit.
To that point.. what are your thoughts on the Santa Barbara wine country? I found that to be pretty dope.
Fan-freaking tastic. I have pro tips if you are headed back. We go annually.
We will definitely be back eventually, although probably not for a while given the CF development. I've said it for a long time and now the wife agrees, if we had unlimited money, SB would be where we'd live.

I guess it's more of an East Coast/flyover thing. I am probably over exposed as I spend 25+% of my time in the Northeast... all the Philly/NY/Boston/OH/etc. people ask about Assville and proclaim that they've been dying to go when I say I'm from NC. Funny enough, half of them have no clue where Charlotte is and many have never heard of it, despite being the largest metro area in the Carolinas by an enormous margin with 7X the population of Asheville.

Portland ME reminded me a lot of Asheville when I went earlier this year. Somehow it moved way slower. Western NC is beautiful. I find I have this conversation with my wife every few months about moving to WNC. All the small mountain towns outside of Asheville are pretty fun. Asheville does have great music, pretty much every night. Which I enjoy! And the brewery scene is dece. Not really surprised no one outside of NC hasn’t heard of Asheville. Outside of Luke Combs growing up there, it doesn’t get in the mainstream very often. I like your Times Square comparison. That’s kinda accurate.
At least it’s finally feeling amazing outside in Char-lit! The weather the past week has been epic.

You would literally need UNLIMITED money to live in SB. An outhouse is 7 figures. I mean, like almost EVERY resident in SB proper is a multi-millionaire so regular joes not found. It's nice to visit. The wine country to the NW/Santa Ynez Valley is A REALISTIC Central Coast wine country town to live in would be Paso Robles assuming remote work/traveling salesman life.

I only really know Charlotte from one of my BILs having going to UNC playing baseball.
