First Story of 2024:
A few weeks ago, I had a closing with an unmarried couple (this is an important piece of info). Most lenders have you sign a name affidavit at closing. It's a pretty simple document that list all the variations of your name that came back on your credit report. It's kinda funny to look at as it could be as simple as some phone operator typing your name in wrong when you apply for internet, cable, power, etc. So I've seen some funky name spellings, etc.
Well, in this case, the "girlfriend" had several different last names listed on her credit report. Which is kind of wild. The boyfriend asks if that was her ex-boyfriends last name? Her answer: yea.....
Turns out, homegirl had not only been married once before, but twice!! And homeboy was just now finding out, at closing, in front of myself and the attorney. What happened next was quite awkward. Boyfriend asks if they can have the room to talk for a second. Attorney and I promptly get up and leave. I hear whisper fighting going on from behind the door....
They took a while in there and the attorney says we really don't have that much time, as they're back to back with closings all day, so we pretty much have until the top of the hour or we'll have to postpone closing.
I reluctantly step back in and they had pretty much agreed to sign and figure it out later. Both obviously pissed at each other. At the end they said to send them a link to write me a review.....I never sent that link....not going to either!
Lesson of the story: Check the register of deeds for your girlfriends name before you decide to buy a house with her....
That wasn't even the most awkward closing I've ever had either.
