Car Talk 6: Best of times and Worst of Times

I'm taking advantage of my free oil change/tire rotation at the Toyota rape palace this AM. They have a used GR Corolla in the showroom I checked out. I must say, what a shitbox! I'm sure it's fun to drive but I'd have a tough time dropping $40K on this thing. It makes the 86 feel like a fuckin' Maybach inside.

Dude yes this gen Corolla hatch looks cool but is a POS inside. The back seat is just about as useful as yours too

I think the market for a 40k econoshitbox is just limited… it’s now occupied by type r, type s, corolla, wrx, golf r … it’s quite a crowded field imo. Some brzs etc also reach 40…

I don't have one but I looked at the back seat, it appeared tiny, so I got in to try it out (behind where I was in the front). It was fine, my head doesn't touch the ceiling, my knees were basically up to the front seat but not jammed into it. My legs are kind of short FWIW, usually head room is a much bigger issue for me than leg room.

It's definitely a small car inside, but it could fit four adults OK.

Yeah this is a very interesting (and also very pointless) test. Even if you drag race or track day bro these numbers are largely useless. It's kind of wild when a Hype R and ElaNtra can beat a Golf R around a track. The Hype Rs piss poor braking performance is kind of embarrassing. It's nice to see VW offering some decent brakes, my GTI's were shit, worst of any car I've owned besides my Taurus I think.

EV6 is kind of a hero in the braking department considering it isn't a 'real' performance vehicle.

Dark Horse braking is indeed kind of wild for how much of a fatass it is, but it's also a $70K Mustang, so I'm glad they strapped on some dece waxables.

I don't think it's pointless. I think a lot of manufacturers tune for 0-60 and the quarter. The acceleration part tells you how much your car has left on the table after that. And the braking test is totally legit. If your car can hero stop from 150............it's got bad ass brakes.

These make sense if you have a 20 mile twisty commute to work and like to listen to loud music to make the cheapness fade away whilst you smash gears and watch the tach.

I think it helps weed out the overrated and identify underrated engine power advertisements. Anyway, I get that nobody drives 150 mph on the street or track that is not the Mulsanne Straight. It's a fun test nonetheless.

I saw a writeup in CD on the Nismo Z.......which sounded like a dud. Mega jacked up price and no manual? The whole purpose of buying the Z is a 400hp car with a manual transmission. That's it. No other purpose.

I think the stealershits were marking them up to the sky... so coupled with the fact that they raised the msrps... it made them near 6 figure propositions.
