DFD. The forum where everybody makes the same choices and then tells anybody trying to join the club that they are the stupidest motherfucker to ever walk the earth.

No mention of dem doors, doe.
I assume you're referring to Ghiberti's large bronze doors, the so-called (by Michelangelo himself) Gates of Paradise? As an architecture student you should know that they are not to be found on il Duomo, but are actually on the baptistery just in front of the church.
And, actually, the doors on the baptistery are replicas. The originals are now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo behind the church, and I didn't take any phone pics of them, though the Mrs. took some with her digital camera.

Lets talk about some :mahtroys: gathering in/out some weird "gaming parlors" and drinking in the streets... and it was only dudes... between the ages of 25-40. All looked super sketch and in groups, all of em had weird cheap booze too.
Italy isn't a safe picturesque place as pictured on top gear and the likes. There are tons of areas that are sketchy as fuck.
Most of Europe is like this. Lots of sketchy areas. Usually the younger dudes who are more punk/rebellious and they just herd up like you said. Happened in Romania all the time when I visited, and a bunch of other places I drove through when I was a wee lad.
Also happened in Montreal, too. I was lost in the wrong neighborhood.
same goes for turkey, and there are places you really want to avoid to go at night, my 36 year old aunt won't even walk alone at night. I remember in new years long ago, at like 3 am, we were walking around by the seaside in Istanbul. This girl was laying on 3 guys legs, she was drunk, and her mom called while she was drunk talking lol.
Fortunately, I'm considered a big guy there, so people won't even bother picking me for fights or anything the like.

First place we hit was the Borghese Gallery, which had an awesome collection of Renaissance paintings and sculptures. Couldn't take pics inside, but here is a shot of the exterior.
