Buddy of mine has a 2004 Wrangler Sahara. what model designation that is for that year, CJ? Anyway, he has the old I6 IIRC. Still runs fine at 260k miles but he just found out during an oil change in prep for an upcoming 600 mile drive that his frame is basically iron oxide dust and a skid plate is barely hanging on because there's nothing left for it to bolt on to. It's been parked outside for all 17 years of it's life of Chicago y winters so this is not surprising. So it's basically used up. He's quite upset about it but he ordered a new JL 2 door Sport S in black. Asked him what engine he's getting but I haven't heard back yet. Also no idea on when it gets delivered.

That thing was pretty terrible to ride in. Back seat was stupid tight with basically zero leg room, and I'm not a tall dude. It wandered badly and I always saw him making constant small steering wheel corrections. It was loud, slow, and rode horribly but he loved it and took it on tons of long-ish road trips all over the mid west and south.
It did have very good AC, , I gotta say.
I think he'll be at how good his new JL will be.

He's going to be by the difference between the TJ and JL.wap wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 3:40 pm

TJ's really aren't that great. Values have gone nuts because people like the heritage, but overall they're just not worth it. I don't get it, really.

Same. I drove a minty 2006 with 65k miles, and a pos 02 with 180k didn’t like either. I don’t get the appeal. Same generation tacoma/4Runner is better in every way.Detroit wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 4:10 pmHe's going to be by the difference between the TJ and JL.wap wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 3:40 pm

Taco and 4R are absolutely better vehicles for most people in most situations.
At the time, the TJ was because it switched from 1800's wagon suspension to 1930's coil suspension. Compared to the YJ before and the CJ before that, it was revolutionary and absolutely drove way better.
But the thing doesn't exist in a Jeep vacuum, compared to everything else, it's still not great. YJ's and CJ's are horrific to drive, bordering on dangerous, so they're easy to improve on. You just have to really love the experience with the top and doors off and whatnot. The compact size is also second to none for off-roading, especially combined with the stick axles.

The 2.0 on less than 33's does surprisingly well. My dad said his 2-door routinely sees 26-28 on the highway. Our JL saw 23-25 easily. It's really a great powertrain for that vehicle.

Yea driving conditions are also varying greatly by location. I constantly see people claim they get "25 city" and when you dig into it... it is 1 street light and 45mph... so yea no shit you'll see that sort of mileage.
The JLU I had averaged just about what I do in the taco. Which makes sense... similar engines/boxy shapes etc. 20s are def possible at lower speeds.

Interesting to note Rubi to Sahara -3/4mpg which seems to be confirmed here.

Rubicons really suck. High fenders and bigger tires must really hurt aero.max225 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 4:39 pmYea driving conditions are also varying greatly by location. I’m keeping my eye out for someone ditching their Rubi AT’s… should quiet down my ride a tad.Detroit wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 4:47 pmRubicons really suck. High fenders and bigger tires must really hurt aero.max225 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 4:39 pm

The Falken AT3's should be quieter than what you have, and keep the lower fenders they probably won't even hurt FE that bad. AND they should fit OK, especially if you don't disconnect your swaybar.

Dats my thought process. I should be able to throw them on with no other changes. Shouldn’t be that much of a FE hit.

He'll like it fine, but the 2.0T is better IMO. My dad's 2-door with the 2.0 is legit fast.

Yea, I gotta agree. This dude literally drove a TJ into the ground for 20 years, it's probably the right call.

As long as he didn't go crazy with options, it should last him a good long while. That engine and transmission has been in everything for ages.
