Seems like a somewhat reasonable price to pay for a classic.wap wrote: ↑Tue Jul 24, 2018 1:36 pm Holy shit does this thing have AC?

This is pretty neat!troyguitar wrote: ↑Mon Jul 23, 2018 9:37 pm Looks like $10-15k for a nice coupe now, beats the hell out of most other classics.

I've no idea how that compares to Beetle prices

It's a good thing I don't have a and a barn or I'd have 5+ damn cars rotating through the stables all the time.

This thread has me somewhat seriously thinking about stupid old cars again. Thanks
I hoped that the Ghia coupes were stupidly expensive like every other cool classic. It seems odd that they aren't yet, maybe one would be both a fun project and a decent investment compared to a modern car?

Fun is obviously subjective, but I had a blast doing my Beetle when I was young and knew nothing and had virtually zero resources besides a bookstore with an automotive section and a local-ish VW speed shop. You, with your greater car knowledge and the internet would find it to be easy to do which, I assume, would make it fun. Additionally, parts were cheap then and I assume they still are but :aintsure: tbh. I don't think you'd ever get rich by doing a "fun" project, ie, making taking a stock Ghia and making it fast-ish and good handling, but you might maybe break even when you decide to sell it. The key is finding a rust-free example because rust-proofing technology was non-existent back then. Fun fact, VW used to advertise that they painted the inside of the door cavities and the under sides of fenders as a rust inhibiting measure. This was advanced rust proofing for the time.
I think you'd enjoy it because these stupid things do have some potential to be made fun to drive and handle well albeit with heavy rear weight bias, which you may enjoy.

Yeah I don't think that something like that would appreciate, but it might at least break even. Who knows, if we end up in AZ maybe there'll be tons of rust free toys to play with... Gotta keep in the holding pattern for now.

Apparently this is a thing, to show an extreme example:
I see no great difference between a Ghia and an old 911, but I'm obviously since one is $10k and the other is $100k+Lwize;112402183 wrote:Singer-like Karmann Ghia as well.
(I wonder if Singer would do a KG, given enough money)
That is the Bader Racing Ghia. For those of you who don’t know (I’d imagine that’s most of you) it is a 911 GT3 powered beast with a Super Beetle frame head and strut mounts on the forward part of the cage. It can then run 944 suspension front and rear, Porsche brakes and the quarter panels are subtly flared to house much wider wheels than stock.

AZ might be a pretty good place to find a clean example. Keep us posted.troyguitar wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 9:16 pm Yeah I don't think that something like that would appreciate, but it might at least break even. And some old Porsche 356 (and 914) engine parts are interchangeable with Beetle (and Ghia) parts. Cylinders, pistons, etc. Don't see why the same wouldn't be true for old 911's, too.
Shit, I think I read somewhere that some Corvair parts could be used in Beetle engines, but don't quote me on that.
