Here it is everyone. Not sure what to do. Gonna have to call corporate. What do I say to my dealership

Here is the estimates for your 2012 GTI with the snapped exhaust cam as shown in the quick video that we sent you

To replace both cams

which is the least I would recommend because the exhaust cam snapped between #1 & #2 cylinders which is very uncommon so I recommend we replace the intake came also while we are in there because there is no way of us knowing the future of the intake cam. FYI there is no way for us to be 100% sure if there is any further damage to the head or the engine until we replace the cams and are able to do further testing

Labor $1120.00

Parts $1800.00

Total $2920.00 + tax

To replace both cams, trimming chain & tensioner

It would be a good idea to replace the trimming chain and tensioner while doing the cams – the tensioner is a common failure @ around 80,000 miles which you are about 12,000 away – FYI if and when the tensioner fails and trimming chain jumps it 100% will bend valves if not take out the engine too

Labor $1400.00

Parts $2900.00

Total $4300.00

To replace both cams, trimming chain, tensioner & cylinder head and valves

FYI there is no way for us to be 100% sure if there is any further damage to the head or the engine until we replace the cams and are able to do further testing

If you need a head

Labor $2100.00

Parts $4500.00

Total $6600.00

Please review and let us know how to proceed

Thank You

Therefore, you should probably do the tensioner.

Lies, all lies.

They're full of shit.

Longblock is $2,500, that's an entirely new engine, you're best off replacing the engine as a whole.

Who wants to start a pool on how much :crang: forks over for his broken non-engine part? I'm going to say he's $1700 out of pocket.
$2500

All :dat:
Broken camshafts are a thing with VW though. Happened more often in FSI days where the cam follower would shit out and jam the shaft. But the TSI engine isn't radically different than the FSI, and still drives the HPFP off the exhaust cam, and as such is still subject to some bullshit type problems.

VW just recalled 92,000 cars for possible snapped camshafts from 2015-2016 model years. Apparently the vacuum pump was driven off the cam and if it broke you'd lose power brakes and possibly crash according to NHTSA, so they forced a recall.
So Mk7 then

No need for intake cam
They borescoped the internals and no damage to valves or pistons according to them, so no other damage
They still don't know what the fuck is wrong with the engine, replacing the cams now will only cause them to snap again if they don't fix the root cause
You're getting raped on that tensioner cost
At $6k they actually should have suggested a used motor which would likely be cheaper than their run around circus fix

Fuck these guys I'd tow it to another shop

Jeebus. I'd have it towed to an independent shop, have them find you a used 2014 engine so you know it already has the updated tensioner, swap the motor out and be done with it. Or if you can find an older longblock cheap enough just have the tensioner updated while it's out. That $6,600 figure is nonsense.

Exactly what I was saying. Been a problem since FSI days, still a problem in TSI days, and still not solved as of 2015/2016 where NHTSA finally threw their dick down on the table forcing a recall.

I'd OK them to remove exhaust cam, do diagnostics on the valve and HP fuel pump, replace any broken/stuck/damaged lifters, possibru replace broken HP fuel pump, throw it all back together, fuck the rest, and dump that car.

Or go to hertz or enterprise car sales and get a nice car for $15k or less with 20kish miles and use your trade in value. I don’t see many other solutions. This sucks but getting everything fixed will likely mean this car is going to keep costing money.

I guarantee they'll find at least 3-5 valves and a hand full of lifters and maybe a couple of springs that "need" replacing.
