Wife wrecked the Rav4 on Friday, and it finally got towed to the dealer today. Unsure on damage cost yet, but given it's a 15' with 60,xxx miles on it, there's a chance it's totaled; and it would've been paid off in 3 months.

Yup. She's fine, kiddo is fine, the person she bumped is fine and had NO damage to her car. My thought is the lady stopped short hoping for an insurance claim, and miscalculated the fact she was on an incline and the wife ended up under her car instead of in the back of it.

Ok first things first main and only thing that matters is that the wife and kiddo are good.

Second ...
No damage to the other persons’ car and the woman’s is totaled ?

I couldn't see any damage to it when I got there to get the kid since it was 10 degrees outside and didn't want him sitting in a potentially cold car waiting on the cops. Wife said that one of the black plastic wheel arches had a couple scratches on it, but nothing else.

Rav has, that I could see: shattered windshield, busted cowl, hood is pushed into the windshield AND dented, front grill is destroyed, bumper cover around it is destroyed and both fenders have damage. Underlying crash support was undisturbed. When she got home, and I got a better look at it, I noticed it looked like it was leaking coolant as well. So, given the age and mileage, insurance MIGHT end up totaling it out, especially if it was leaking coolant and the block split when the tow driver had to start it to get it on the flat bed this morning.

Glad she’s ok.

I wager about $9k of damage, though.
That's pushing about half the value of it at this point.

Oh well, just have to wait and see what insurance says.

$11.5k, roughly, in damage. Still not enough to total it out. Is going to take about a month to repair, as everything is dependent on parts from Japan, if they can't find them stateside.

Pretty much only thing NOT being replaced on the front of the car is the suspension, motor and trans.

Man I wouldn't want that car back. How close was it to a total loss?

I'm surprised the suspension didn't take a hit at all.

Total loss is usually around 60% of the vehicle value, so I would wager it is fairly close... it may actually go over because the initial estimate is usually too low every time

Has to be 75% of the value through our insurance. Shop had it completely tore down for the estimate. So, unless something unseen pops up when they start putting things back on, there’s nothing we can do to have the total it. Either way, it’ll be gone before spring is fully here.

My old man (may he RIP) was somewhat of an enhanced damage specialist in his later years....

Meaning, he had no compunction about taking his damaged vehicle on a trip through woods on collision courses with some happy little trees in order to achieve enough damage to get cars totalled.....

When I pointed out that this was insurance fraud he would scoff and say "what are they gonna do to me? put me in jail? At least I'd be getting three hots and a cot....."

Yea this tends to vary state to state. But man 75% is the highest I have heard of so far. Usually 60-65% but maybe something changed since covid

Dang. That might just be out of reach after the car is torn down.
