One thing I may do someday is upgrade the stereo/speakers.. Anyone have experience with the OEM 430 radio? Worth upgrading to, or would you just go aftermarket?

The 430 seems not worth while as it won't improve the actual sound quality.

I am assuming you have the base 8 speaker? How bad is it?
I figured upgrade is necessary, the best bang for the buck IMO is a sub/amp combo. However I am not sure as to what the best one is for the Jeep application.

Something like that... I'd think 1 was enough.

Yeah base eight in mine.. In a normal car it'd probably be plenty, but in a noisey Jeep, it leaves a lot to be desired. Volume probably goes up to 30 or 35 (haven't tried turning it all the way up yet to see where it stops), and I have to keep it at around 25 to hear it well. Sub/amp would definitely help. I've never really been a car audio guy, so I don't know much. I did an uber stealth box in the GTI with a shallow mount 8" sub and a small amp and that was plenty for that car with the stock headunit and speakers.. For the Jeep I'm assuming you want a higher power headunit (maybe an external amp for that? I'm not sure how that works) and then a sub/amp combo as well. I'm sure you can get an amp that would drive the sub and headunit, but like I said, I'm not a car audio guy at all.

Depends on the budget if the base speakers are shit as is, you'd need to get a 4 channel amp to do the speakers or a 5 channel do speakers+sub. It gets expensive quick. Normally stock speakers are ok if you have a sub, (I liked that setup in my Golf). Also since you'd do 4 channel I am not sure how you'd send it to all 8 speakers, you may have to have some duds :( and just do 4 nice 6.5s + nice HU + nice smallish sub.

I don't think you'd need anything more than 300watts RMS for the sub.

:word: I'll search around on some Jeep forums to see what people are doing, but a small sub/amp should cover my needs.

A nice sub+Box is around $800 all said and done.
~1500 if you have to do Speakers+HU+Another amp.
Not completely otherworldly but not ideal.

I spent more like $500 on speakers+HU+amp+sub in the vibe. The amp+sub was about $250 and that's buying a relatively nice Image Dynamics sub.

A "sub box" is an MDF cube with a hole in it, no reason to spend $$$ on anything fancy. Building it yourself actually allows you to custom fit it to your car which is better anyway.

I have older versions of these:

I was hoping you'd see this discussion and chime in. Building my own box would be cool, but I do like the one that Max linked where it fits in to the side of the car rather than just having a standalone box just chilling back there.

A custom fitted box would make a lot of sense. But yes, pending the components you can go cheaper or more expensive. I picked around "midrange" prices.
~600 box+Sub
~200 amp
~300 HU (could get one for as low as $100 or as high as 800)
~200 new speakers (4)
~150 Amp for speakers
~50 wiring

You can save a ton of money by just getting a small sub+box 2nd hand.... $80 for my bmw. And I did a $120 HU + $50 wiring. Cheapo speakers for $80

But if you want new/custom fit things get pricy.

It's that damn $600 box+sub that fucks it all up. All you need to drive it is a $100 amp, but if you're spending $700 then you might as well get the $100 HU and $200 in regular speakers too. Polk db6501 front and 651 rear for example are efficient enough that the $100 HU can drive them just fine without needing an external amp.

I guess what's another $1000 on a $40k :truk: anyway? :troywax:
