With 34hp or 50hp for the Ghia you'd have to mod it just to keep up with traffic...
"TOP SPEED" of 74MPH... for the lower end model... I mean... where do I sign.
Yes, it is pretty and timeless but it would be shit to drive daily.
My modded Beetle pegged the speedo needle at 90 and kept accelerating. I DD'd it for 2 years NFG. Of course, I was in my early 20's then and might feel different today.
But a Ghia would make a 5/7 fun project car to drive around in the summer.

On nice roads on the weekend for sure.
About as reliable as you can make a classic car thanks to air cooled engines and few creature comforts.
But I'd think I'd like a 1800-2000CC engine with at least 70hp to make it "acceptable" around town. Plus likely an entire re-wire. 40 + year old west german wiring may not be up to spec.
Thankfully once again that would be relatively simple.

I've never liked the look of the 914.
It's a Karmann Ghia.
Karmann built it, but it's quite a bit different from the Ghia.
Though, I have to side with Ron. It's a pretty handsome limboing beetle. Better than the 914.

My guess would be that Chris took some time off because he has read the dialogue on this page 1,345 times and decided to spend some of his free time doing something besides beating a horse to death.

70 hp is very doable, especially if you get a 69 or 70 with the dual port heads for better breathing and get a big bore kit and a 2bbl carb and exhaust. I think my beetle made 70 or 80 hp, and that was plenty to more than keep up with traffic, being all of 1800 lbs or so.

70hp is not bad for something that weighs in at around 2100-2200lbs.
Then again I wasn’t a huge fan of the civic I used to have in the fam.... 101hp and 2200lbs turdriffic but st least it could keep up with modern traffic

The Beetle and Ghia weighed 1800 lbs so 70-80 hp was really sufficient.

996 Turbo with 66k on the clock for $48k. I think that's a bit much but I guess that's just what they sell for now. Should only appreciate, this one is in excellent condition and looks absolutely beautiful in black. Just needs a GT3 center console, new radio, and puppy protector for the rear. These have roof rack points too. Even has ass roasters.
Also very rare deviating carpet on this one, with grey interior over black carpet, which looks great.
31k miles, base model, nicer steering wheel, and butt roasters AND coolers. frosty balls. $40 grand. Throw an exhaust on there to get rid of the single butthole problem and you're golden.

It's a looker for sure. Black probably isn't the most desirable color for these, as most seem to be black or silver on the used market. And it's a bitch to keep clean. I told myself no more black vehicles after my MK6. But even I'll admit that when that car was clean it was OTPHJ worthy, and this looks to be the same.
I really like the contrasting interior on this one. I don't normally like 996 interiors but this looks good. Just need to bring some of the electronics up to date in it but that's comparatively cheap to do. Maybe paint the center console black to match the exterior too, which is a common interior dress up mod on the 996/997 that adds a lot.
I bet this is a riot to drive. Have you ever driven a 996TT?
