That's one thing why I like the DSG over manuals, deal with that almost everyday. It's "doable" on manual, when I had mine, I never keep RPM's below 2k for these reasons, shift at 3.5ish usually, unless I'm in traffic. It just keeps you more focused, in which auto makes you feel lazy in comparison.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Wed Oct 18, 2017 2:15 pmTotally true. I actually think autos are better at the "oh shit I need to accelerate RIGHT NOW" scenario than manuals, because 9/10 times you aren't in the right gear anyway, and any automatic can downshift and apply power faster than a manual driver can. Even the dim witted autos are faster than I am at this type of acceleration.max225 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 18, 2017 10:50 am The 370 auto was faster in every situation over the manual.
Programming is not an issue because paddles. Don’t like the programming shift yourself, way faster than you can ever do yourself with a 3rd pedal.
It’s like you guys are complaining mashing the throttle on an auto vs deliberately knowing the situation in a manual and preselecting the gear and doing the same.
non apples to apples comparison

This is a rare bird. sport + E39 I6. I like these cars a lot... they are pretty much F30 3series sized. The E46 was a bit too small in terms of back seat that car is perfectly slzed.

That is the car that I was trying to buy instead of the Vibe back in early 2014, but I had a hard time finding one from a non seller at a non price. I still kind of want one, though at this point I think I'd get an E46 wagon instead.max225 wrote:This is a rare bird. sport + E39 I6. Only 64k miles and claims to be a 6 speed, though there's too much glare and you can't see the pattern on the shift knob. Price is kind of crazy, but I have no doubt they'll get something close to that.

5 speed, there was no such thing as a 6 speed MT 530i. The 6 speed transmission was only offered on the 540i and M5. This one is in marginally better shape, but I'd save the thousands of doll hairs and go with the first one you posted up.coogles wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2017 8:28 amYa. Want.

I actually sent the first one to my buddy who lives in Cleveland. He's looking to replace his 2005 Focus. We'll see.

You'll still have the prerequisite BMW cooling system issues, and probably bushing or suspension type problems to deal with. But man that's a hell of a car. I should buy it.max225 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2017 11:09 amalso the i6 is more reliable than the v8Johnny_P wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2017 9:08 am

Cooling issues are easy. You just change the overflow tank+ radiator and water pump. LIke $300 in parts and 2-3 hrs of your time to last 100k miles. No issues there.
Suspensions are hard tho. Usually you need a lift... parts are pricy and bolts are a bitch to get out etc, and then you have to align the bitch. Unfortunately BMW suspensions wear out in about 50-75k miles unlike the japs which last 100-150k

The other big advantage of the 530 over the 540 in the E39 is that the I6 models got proper rack and pinion steering while the V8's still had the ancient recirculating ball system. That plus significantly less weight on the nose == a better car to drive despite making less power.

I'm sure corrosion has basically welded those bolts together on the suspension.max225 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2017 12:35 pmCooling issues are easy. You just change the overflow tank+ radiator and water pump. LIke $300 in parts and 2-3 hrs of your time to last 100k miles. No issues there.

This is why I'll never buy a used Northern car again. My allroad looked perfect on the inside and on the body, but underneath and in the suspension the thing was totally fucked. It needed all new front and rear subframes and the whole suspension replaced, hubs/knuckles and all. I liked that car too.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2017 12:47 pmI'm sure corrosion has basically welded those bolts together on the suspension.max225 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2017 12:35 pm
