Don't listen to the bros on here trying to rationalize new cars. They're full-on luxury purchases.

They're too much of a mixed bag especially on the used market. All German cars are, really.
Mazda 3S isn't a bad pick really. Drove better than my MK6 did, just had a bit less power. Not too much less doe. Far more reliable, and runs on 87, and insurance would be cheap.
The Accord is a great pick, maybe not as sporty doe.
Can't go wrong with Jap cars in the long haul. I really want to check out an IS350 and a G37/Q50 or whatever when it comes time to IDK, there are a bunch of cars out there, I have no desire to go back to any that I've already owned.

The 3S was legit not bad. It compared more with the Civic Si doe, kind of a tier down from hot hatch level. I actually liked it more than the Si. Don't tell doe. I saw it as a lateral move from the GTI and that wasn't really what I wanted I guess. Shit was expensive too, but they depreciate like used condoms so you can get them cheap on the used market.

My wife has an 09 mazda3, just a base model. It drives pretty well and her dad's S model probably isn't far off from my Si in a straight line. I like them both, though she has had some issues with hers.Johnny_P wrote:

The LSD...though, it'll be tough to give that up.

Very true. Nobody enjoys a car that can't put the power down.Calvinball wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2017 6:04 pmMy wife has an 09 mazda3, just a base model. Plus your car was the better value by far and came in fun colors. The Mazda is only available in despair and red.

That sounds , I'm but by now it would probably be toast anyways.Apex wrote:I have some regrets with selling my WRX. 2004 wingless WRB, lowered on JDM STi springs, Perrin rear sway bar, 5Zigen exhaust, and 16x8 Rota Slipstreams with 245's all around. That car was stupid fun.
I did sell it so I could buy my 968 so it's not all bad.

Pure , it's better then a GTI doe even if the math doesn't work out
Improvements include:
-suspension
-cams/valves/valve springs/turbo
-part time awd which means more hooning in rain and snow
-ramz
-paint options
-upgraded headlights
-upgraded exhaust
-upgraded brakes

, such a win here but it needs to be complimented with something fun or else suicide might be the end game.Detroit wrote:Johnny_P wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2017 12:48 pm Paid off or making payments doesn't really play into the cost of ownership of the car.
Pro tip: Owning a new car isn't that much more expensive than owning a problem-laden used one. They both depreciate. One requires far more maintenance than the other. The only real value play in automotive land is to buy a depreciated dependable used car, which no enthusiast will do.
Or, a 1SMP lease on something with maintenance covered and $0 down.

I really liked driving this as a rental for a while but man have I seen some of these rust out over the years. In Canada that needs to be a consideration :-(dtraill27 wrote:C&D loved the long term mazda 3 hatch they had

Still not 100% sure that it's worth the price premium over a GTI, but I definitely get the appeal.

How are the headlights better ? Aren't they same as the HIDs
How are the brakes better ? Same as pp?

Exhaust has a valve which you can control by selecting the driving mode.max225 wrote:How is the exhaust better ? Moar tips ?Tarspin wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2017 11:25 pm Pure , it's better then a GTI doe even if the math doesn't work out

Headlights look better, have the signature double "U" design, not sure if the GTI headlights change directions with steering input like the R, or if they have the turning bulbs built into them to light up curbs etc when you're steering or using the turn signals
Yeah the brakes are same as the PP I suppose, which is optioned up from a base GTI
Not everyone cares about those features but they are still included on the R.

One of the problems my wife had was the damned tire valves would rust out and fail. Happened to all four wheels; she'd be driving and all of a sudden have a flat. The one time I was with her I pulled over at a gas station and when I went to take off the cap the whole damned thing just fell inside the tire.Tarspin wrote:I really liked driving this as a rental for a while but man have I seen some of these rust out over the years.
