Nearly the same amount of power, weighs less, and makes power at a lower RPM than the STI.

Too bad it's fucking hideous.

It'll probably make a decent DD. Maybe I'll go and consider it in a couple of months. I wish they had a hatch

I guess it's not TERRIBAD, but still...

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Si. I think it's a legit not bad entry to the field. It can paper race with a GTI PP, likely costs less, and will hold its value way better than one. And doesn't have a complicated diff, just a standard helical limited slip so no parts or repair schedules.

I can put up with the front end I think. The rear is where it all falls apart with the giant fakevents. Then again you're basically never looking at the rear of the car so ? I think the STI's rear end is pretty bad aside from the wing but I never look at it so meh.
I think the coupe looks better in the back.

Oh totally agree. I didn't even bother driving the regular WRX, I knew it wasn't what I wanted. But still, to have only a second separate the two is a bit disappointing. It's not like the STi is a great track day tool right off the showroom floor, either, though. Desperately needs an AOS, an oil cooler, and some more serious pads to run more than a couple laps on a track like VIR.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2017 11:16 amI think it's awesome. But I prefer the rumbles of the STI engine, it's peaky power delivery, and the much better driving connection/feeling. The WRX's engine was not for me. Shame, because if it had a more interesting motor I'd have just bought it. Absolutely nobody home below 2500 RPM, worse than the STI, power dies off up top, DI carbon build up to deal with from a 1st gen system, and around town driving would be horrible once it became heat soaked.
If you're tracking the car the STI is still the one to get. The transmission is stronger, the diffs are far better, and you don't rely on torque vectoring through the brakes. It'll hold up to repeated track lapping much better.

If you're paying MSRP the Si is really compelling. $24,xxx for the Si versus $29,xxx for the GTI Sport. There are crazy s to be had on the GTI, doe, and for equal money (I've seen some advertised for <$24k), I'm taking the GTI without a second thought.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2017 11:38 amI'd love to hear your thoughts on the Si. One other thing to note, the Si in that test is wearing Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2s - max perf summers - I'd bet the GTI was on no-seasons.

And the Si is worth $20k on a trade in 4 years where the GTI is worth $15k...coogles wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2017 11:56 amIf you're paying MSRP the Si is really compelling. $24,xxx for the Si versus $29,xxx for the GTI Sport. Coupes are much more fun when the top drops. Otherwise, meh, loss of useful space.
You really think a Civic SI will hold $20k in trade value in 4 years? It's still a Civic...

It'll be 15 easy which translates to $187.50 a month in depreciation. Good luck finding that on anything else that is worth drivingstripethree wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2017 12:13 pm Coupes are much more fun when the top drops. Otherwise, meh, loss of useful space.

The woman's 19k civic is still 11-12k after 5 years and 65k miles

Civics/corollas/accords/camrys are the cheapest vehicles to own if you own them from 0-10 years and buy new...
Low depreciation
Nearly no maintenance
epic reliability
None of that can be said about a GTI.

I'd say mine probably depreciated about 40% now, might as well drive it till it's done

I got rid of my GTI because I was starting to get those smalllllll little parts breaking down. I kept up with the routine maintenance, but the hassle of replacing simple parts on that little German 2.0L crammed in that engine bay made me not want to deal with it.
The depreciation was depressing too. $26K total out the door in '08. Sold for $7K in '16.

Mine is just as expensive as a base new corolla, 48k miles, 2015 SE model, bought in October 2014. In the words of Donald Trump SAD!Acid666 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2017 12:42 pmI got rid of my GTI because I was starting to get those smalllllll little parts breaking down. Working on the car is also frustrating as well, that's why I didn't mod it as much as I did with the mk6.

I didn't think depreciation on my GTI was too bad at all. Sticker was $28.3, sold it 6.5 years later for $11.5 on trade. Even at sticker that nets out to $210/mo. When I was looking to sell it at 3.5 years I was only getting trade offers for $14-$14.5, but then only dropping $3k in the next three years? I'll take that.
