I had a WJ for 6 years what do you wanna know ? The 4.slow is meh, I’d try to score a 4.7, they are cheap as dirt at the moment.
Main issue on the higher end trims is a blend door that breaks and requires the removal of the dash or the cutting of a small door into the mechanism for replacement.
I also noticed that the higher mileage 4.7s seem to be popping... but
if due to reliability or Guadalupe pouring bleach into the engine when it runs low on gas
4.slow seems to be more readily available with the selec-trac transfer case so you can run in 2Hi. 4.7 seems to be what I would be interested in, and there doesn't seem to be much of a price difference. V8 noises and torque. The seats look like they'd be super comfortable.
Blend door issue seems to be rather common, and well documented.
How did you like yours? Seems like if you kept something for 6 years you liked it. What trim level did you have? Anything you would have changed on it?
One "concern" is the fuel tank hangs low out back. I'd have to check and see if the skid plate is the thicker version on any I'd be looking at.
I liked it a fair amount and should have never sold it, as it was cherry.
I owned it from 55-115k miles, the issues it had were that the condenser sprung a leak, not sure why I think it may have been punctured.
A cam sensor that went faulty, and a ps leak.
It was very reliable for me, also very comfortable.
The back seats are rather small and oddly shaped thanks to the wheel wells so if you’re tall and carry a lot of passengers that’s something to keep in mind.
The fuel tank has a skid plate made of fairy thin metal, but it is still functional.
I had a 2003 limited. If possible go for a 2002+ model the 99-01 had some rotor and caliper issues that Chrysler fixed in the later years and various other updates.
The 4.0 is rather slow and I believe it comes with the ancient 4 speed auto. The 4.7 comes with a 5 speed and is rather fast. There is also a HO version that goes 0-60 in 6.5. Power is bumped from 230 -265 in that. Also the 4.0 isn’t exactly more fuel efficient, i averaged 15.5 in my 4.7 my buddy with his 4.0 was at 16-17. The 4.7 is literally superior in every way.
The regular 4.7 it uses copper plugs so they need to be done every 30k miles.
Overland trim is the best as it comes with the ho standard and the best 4wd system, as well as rock rails and factory skid plates. They are pretty hard to find though ...
Transfer cases are kind of Irrelevant unless you go for the overland.
