The engine is good, but don't forget it uses timing belts which are not cheap to change every 100k... which the PO will likely leave for you to do. The 4.0 is not exactly unreliable here...Desertbreh wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 2:22 pmRight on time. The 4.7 is one of the world's smoothest, most reliable engines. I just don't worry about those things. It's like my Mercedes. You buy a used vehicle in nice condition. You've already bought it for 20-30% of MSRP. That's your savings. You gotta do what you gotta do to make it reliable.max225 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 2:24 pmThe engine is good, but don't forget it uses timing belts which are not cheap to change every 100k... which the PO will likely leave for you to do. This is a cheap one...

I bought it to take down to Mexico and make an overlanding rig out of it, but they won't legalize it since it's too old, so now I drove it back here to the states to sell

because if your interest in the vehicle is 2-3 years that old pile + maintenance + trying to sell it to someone even poorer than you presents a wonderful life lesson; where it costs more than a lease on a brand new vehicle once you add everything up.Desertbreh wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 2:27 pmI just don't worry about those things. And the icing on the cake is dealing with said people and taking off bumpers to change light bulbs while tearing your skin on rusty Aryan metal is just a bit too much for someone that worked their whole life to get where they are, vs the average owner of said vehicle who fell victim to at least 5 pump and dumps and has a mild crack habit.

Yeah nice work there. Another view through Max colored lenses of the sorry pit of despair that is humanity.Detroit wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 2:56 pmmax225 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 2:28 pm

Xterras are the cheapest 4x4s that are actually in decent shape under 10k. The issue is... selling it after... since low price of entry will carry through into resale or lack there of.

Cheap pathfinder...
This is a good deal if the owner could hold out some kind of hope that oil had been changed on the reg.

Here's a bit of a unicorn that nobody cares about. Isuzu Trooper with 84k on the clock and only $4200. This one has an automatic paired to a V6 engine and a very interesting and capable 4WD system. Uses a multi plate clutched center differential that, when in auto mode in 4Hi, will vary between 0% and 50% power to the front wheels. Also has a low range with gear reduction and 100% lockup. And a rear LSD.
Aftermarket likely sucks on these, and who knows if that TOD system even works, as it's relying on 12 something sensors from 1999.

First instinct is these are gigantic. Looked it up basically same size as a 5th gen 4Runner
Independent rear suspension seems to be the big negative to these from the overlanding/offroad crowd but likely doesn't actually matter. That and the Xterra is tougher, more maneuverable, lighter.
4runner will probably return better fuel economy. It's funny how that actually starts to matter with these vehicles. You're looking at like 12 MPG city, 17 MPG highway if you have tires with an off road-ish tread on them.

Isuzus were quite over-engineered for the japanase. I seem to remember horror stories with simple repairs due to bespoke expensive parts and 4x4 gear. Things like axles/brakes/hubs were super pricy to replace.

Monteros are as are montero sports. But they have gone into the ghettos and got ragged to shit, because Mitsubishi is the Nissan of 10-20 years ago. Lots of shitty customers that ruined the vehicles because
yeah lots of them beat to shit, but a well cared one would be great. Very reliable platforms.max225 wrote:Monteros are as are montero sports.
