I'm honestly very and . The only job I've ever coveted here, that I've built from literally nothing for 4 years and the one I totally saw myself retiring from in a few years, is basically being shut down so I can move into this new gig. But, as I see it, my options all suck:
1) Accept it - honestly the most likely option - and be miserable while getting burned out and plan on retiring before I'm ready.
2) Refuse to do it and get fired for insubordination
3) Quit and piss away 28 years of seniority, 5 weeks of vacation, and a 15 minute commute and try to find another gig at my age
FUCK
I came up with a couple of ideas to save my current job and my sanity/happiness, which I presented to bossbro last week.
We sat down in his office and, after he reiterated to me why he needed me in the position, it's currently a shitshow, etc, etc, etc, I asked him if he ever actually saw/read any of the kid's emails. He said no, he just hears about the problems, which means he's only going by what poison alphaprick former boss is pouring into his ear. Well, the kid has been copying me on all of his emails with our vendors and with our salespeople for the last couple weeks, and frankly, he's GOOD. I was after hearing what a fuckup he is, all the communication problems, etc. Every single one of his emails use good grammar, complete sentences, and are full of detail, little spreadsheet, etc. He juggles a LOT of and he keeps everything straight, between 6-7 salespeople and 7 or 8 processors and dozens of orders at any given time. I told bossbro this and he switched up the story a bit. It wasn't communication exactly that the kid is failing at, it's more that he doesn't push back when a salesperson askes for something unreasonable or when a vendor pushes an order out beyond what their quoted lead time is supposed to be. Basically, he is not a good, forceful enough advocate for the company and he just takes shit from our salespeople without questioning them at all. Example: Kid quotes a salesperson 10 days lead time to process an order. Salesperson enters an order with 6 day lead time. 3-4 days later salesperson sends a frantic email saying the customer can't wait for 10 days, we HAVE to ship in 6. Kid pushes vendor to speed up their lead time. Vendor manages to do it in 8 days. Salesperson says that is "totally unacceptable". Customer gets pissed, bossbro hears about "another shit show" from Kid. Fuuuck that.
This actually fit in with my : I told bossbro I had 2 concerns. 1), the kid is a fine communicator and I don't think I could bring the level of change or improvement to the position that he's looking for, which will only reflect badly on me. And 2) I feel my current job has a lot of value that he doesn't see. I do a shit ton of things and catch things before they become yuuge problems down the road that he never knows about, and to stop that will just let these problems build to the point that in a couple of years they're going to need attention to solve again. He understood what I was saying, thankfully. So I gave him my proposal, which was to have me have a foot in each job. To wik let the kid continue to do what he's doing, do what he is good at, and I'll just sort of oversee things and step in when needed to advocate for us to a vendor or tell a salesperson that no, we can't accommodate their unreasonable, changed expectations, or point out when they need to correct a mistake on their order before we send it out for processing. Things that will have a lot more credibility coming from me and my 28 years of experience here than from him, and that the kid was too timid to do himself. Letting him continue the day to day shit will allow me to continue to do my regular job as well, and I wouldn't have to change my hours. Bossbro LOVED the idea. He was immediately excited and wanted to meet with the kid's boss immediately to discuss further, but he was out for a couple days so we meet soon after. Prior to that meeting I went to the kid's boss and told him that I had an idea that I basically demanded that he back me on in the meeting, which, after I explained it to him, he said he would, and he did.
We then presented it to the kid earlier this week. He wasn't thrilled , but he liked the fact that I would be taking some heat off of him from the vendors and the salespeople, so he'll just fine. Also, they're going to move him from the Production office up to the main office right next to me, which is funny because the original plan was for me to move to the Production office, but I raised a stink about that. Similarly, instead of my hours changing, his hours are changing. He used to come in at 5:00am and leave at 2:00 which is , but now he'll work from 6:30 - 3:00.
So, best possible outcome for me, all things considered. This will all begin after the first of the year.

Prior to that meeting I went to the kid's boss and told him that I had an idea that I basically demanded that he back me on in the meeting, which, after I explained it to him, he said he would, and he did.
We then presented it to the kid earlier this week. He wasn't thrilled , but he liked the fact that I would be taking some heat off of him from the vendors and the salespeople, so he'll just fine. Also, they're going to move him from the Production office up to the main office right next to me, which is funny because the original plan was for me to move to the Production office, but I raised a stink about that. Similarly, instead of my hours changing, his hours are changing. He used to come in at 5:00am and leave at 2:00 which is , but now he'll work from 6:30 - 3:00.
So, best possible outcome for me, all things considered. This will all begin after the first of the year.

Wanted to follow up on this.
I came up with a couple of ideas to save my current job and my sanity/happiness, which I presented to bossbro last week.
We sat down in his office and, after he reiterated to me why he needed me in the position, it's currently a shitshow, etc, etc, etc, I asked him if he ever actually saw/read any of the kid's emails. He said no, he just hears about the problems, which means he's only going by what poison alphaprick former boss is pouring into his ear. Well, the kid has been copying me on all of his emails with our vendors and with our salespeople for the last couple weeks, and frankly, he's GOOD. I was after hearing what a fuckup he is, all the communication problems, etc. Every single one of his emails use good grammar, complete sentences, and are full of detail, little spreadsheet, etc. He juggles a LOT of and he keeps everything straight, between 6-7 salespeople and 7 or 8 processors and dozens of orders at any given time. I told bossbro this and he switched up the story a bit. It wasn't communication exactly that the kid is failing at, it's more that he doesn't push back when a salesperson askes for something unreasonable or when a vendor pushes an order out beyond what their quoted lead time is supposed to be. Basically, he is not a good, forceful enough advocate for the company and he just takes shit from our salespeople without questioning them at all. Example: Kid quotes a salesperson 10 days lead time to process an order. Salesperson enters an order with 6 day lead time. 3-4 days later salesperson sends a frantic email saying the customer can't wait for 10 days, we HAVE to ship in 6. Kid pushes vendor to speed up their lead time. Vendor manages to do it in 8 days. Salesperson says that is "totally unacceptable". Customer gets pissed, bossbro hears about "another shit show" from Kid. Fuuuck that.
This actually fit in with my : I told bossbro I had 2 concerns. 1), the kid is a fine communicator and I don't think I could bring the level of change or improvement to the position that he's looking for, which will only reflect badly on me. And 2) I feel my current job has a lot of value that he doesn't see. I do a shit ton of things and catch things before they become yuuge problems down the road that he never knows about, and to stop that will just let these problems build to the point that in a couple of years they're going to need attention to solve again. He understood what I was saying, thankfully. So I gave him my proposal, which was to have me have a foot in each job. To wik let the kid continue to do what he's doing, do what he is good at, and I'll just sort of oversee things and step in when needed to advocate for us to a vendor or tell a salesperson that no, we can't accommodate their unreasonable, changed expectations, or point out when they need to correct a mistake on their order before we send it out for processing. Things that will have a lot more credibility coming from me and my 28 years of experience here than from him, and that the kid was too timid to do himself. Letting him continue the day to day shit will allow me to continue to do my regular job as well, and I wouldn't have to change my hours. Bossbro LOVED the idea. He was immediately excited and wanted to meet with the kid's boss immediately to discuss further, but he was out for a couple days so we meet soon after.
