So I'm gonna take it to my VW dillership for the glass replacement. With all the driver assist stuff I want it done by them and this will also require ANOTHER driver assist recalibration with VCDS.
Geico is turning this into a massive pain in the ass though because they insist that I go and pay for the repair up front and then submit the bill for reimbursement. The body shop is saying that's not how it normally goes down.

Finally got it sorted for the most part. OEM glass has been ordered by the VW dillership and they will be submitting an estimate to Geico sometime today.
It seems like I won't have to pay up front at least for right now.

It's simpler than that. You just dig out the chip so it's clean of loose glass or whatever, then you stick this sticker with a nipple at the end around the chip. A syringe full of polymer or something is inserted into the nipple and you push the polymer down. Then, pull up on the syringe, and it sucks the air bubbles out while the polymer fills the cracks. Once you don't get any more bubbles, you park the car in the sun to let the sun set it. 30-60 min later, you pull it off the windshield and wipe off excess. Works insanely well. I've filled chips like this that I couldn't even find later. They key is to do it instantly to avoid the spreading.Tarspin wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2017 11:13 pmMy neighbor worked for one of those glass repair tents at gas stations etc and they used to do a two step fix... 1.) Use a tiny application specific drill bit to stop the crack by drilling at its end points and he would do every crack line (no pun intended), 2.) Some clear polymer filler for the existing damage. I'm sure that I've seen these guise around recently so the option is still there.Detroit wrote:Holy shit. The kit to repair it yourself is like $20 from any auto parts store. Follow the instructions perfectly, and it'll turn out fine. JUST DO NOT WAIT because it WILL spread.
I've probably fixed 10 chips just like that in my life with fantastic results every time.
Funny thing, I heard a loud smack on my windshield yesterday and saw what looked like white patches where the glass took a rock. Luckily I was going pretty slowly because of traffic conditions or this would be me too!

I could have picked someone else but I don't know any glass repair places as I've never had one cracked. Safelite should be fine for a repair though. I'll be getting it fixed Thursday.Desertbreh wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2017 8:01 pm
Right. I have USAA they have zero deductible repair......which makes sense for them....two of my winshields are HUD so I assume $1500ish.
I've had windshields repaired with the epoxy stuff before, usually comes out alright. Not perfect but alright.

I've literally been creating pockets of space around my car lately including proactive lane changes to avoid semis.[user not found] wrote:Blue cars are cursed.
Tarspin better get a bubble around his.
I did add stone guard to the entire front end of the car so that should help with the some of the flying rocks.
As for out of control Nigerians (Indians in my hood)... well that's another story. After the Camry incident I've been looking closely at the cars behind me and setting the range on my adaptive cruise to longer then normal follow range. Fkn technology doesn't like when cars change lanes into my bubble doe
